We are deeply saddened to announce that the Lahaina Jodo Mission and Temple Grounds were destroyed in the devastating fire on August 8, 2023, that swept through Lahaina.
The property is temporarily CLOSED and access is restricted. We kindly request that visitors refrain from accessing the grounds for their safety.
Regrettably, the fire consumed several key structures including the main temple, the three-tiered pagoda (columbarium), the bell tower, community hall, entrance gate, minister’s residence and temple and minister’s offices. Despite these losses, there is a hope as the bronze Amida Buddha statue remains sitting in repose amidst the ruins.
The wooden Amida Buddha statue that is the main image of devotion in the main temple building was saved from the fire. This image was twice saved from fire, the first time in1968 when the original temple building burnt and now again in 2023.
Our ancestors’ urns, which were housed in the first level of the pagoda, received much damage but the majority of the urns are intact. We are grateful for the countless messages of condolence, support and encouragement we have received from around the globe.
